Secret of a Child’s Upbringing

Secret of a Child’s Upbringing

Someone told me once that a secret of a child’s upbringing is, when they do a good thing to you, not to say to them, ‘Oh, you are such a good boy/girl.’ but to say ‘Oh, thank you. You helped me a lot. I’m just happy.’ The former act might make them too proud of themselves; it could make them feel superior to other people. The latter should make them think they are just helping others; their deed makes them happy.

When I heard this, I felt I had suddenly been awakened to the elementary truth.

Today when our children helped with the dishes and the laundry, I remembered this axiom and promptly said to them, ‘Oh, thank you! You saved our lives!’ Hearing this, they twinkled happily and archly, smiling from ear to ear. Their deed and smile made us happy; they made both us and them happy!

Even the trials and tribulations of parenting will later be fondly remembered.
