(4) 水、飲みたい人は、手を挙げてください。

Lastly, let us turn to and consider (4), which is an informal, more colloquial version.

Here, we might as well look at the problem of its treatment in terms of two different viewpoints—the speaker’s viewpoint and the listener’s.

In the case of the former, the tacit portion, namely, 「、」(= pause plus glottal stop [ʔ]) in 水、飲みたい人 could correspond to either「が」,「を」, or「の」, depending on the intention, purport, and/or feeling of the speaker on the spot.

In the latter case, on the other hand, the unsaid part could serve the listener few clues, in principle, in tracking or determining which of「が」,「を」, or「の」the speaker has aimed at.

But in any case, this might cause few substantial problems because the overall discourse would usually resolve the ambiguity, or the indeterminacy might cause few problems, if any, in the actual conversation.

Well, this is the final episode. Thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed the sessions.
