I have compared Japanese (J) and English (E), starting from Thursday. Today is the fourth and final day.
The topic of the day is「主語」.
I remember that 山田暢彦-san mentioned some time ago (at NOMU Connect—a Facebook Group) 金谷武洋-san’s book. 金谷-san is famous for an argument against the concept of ‘subject’「主語」in J. And in fact, my argumentation in these posts here is perfectly consistent with his view. Let me explain.
To summarize what I have been argued:
J: 「主観的事態把握」「虫の眼」「会話の ‘参与者’ を明確には意識せず」「人称代名詞：数は多いが多用せず」
vs.
E:「客観的事態把握」「鳥の眼」「会話の ‘参与者’ を明確に意識」「人称代名詞：数は少ないが多用」
Note in particular the features of J; apparently, they go hand in hand with the position of ‘subject’-displacer.
At this point, however, you may ask, “What about「～は」or「～が」? Don’t they mark ‘subject’ in J?” Contrary to the expectations of many, the answer is negative.
(a)「は」is not a ‘subject’ marker in J. It’s a ‘topic’ marker. In「象は鼻が長い」, is「象は」a ‘subject’? No way.「は」simply presents a ‘topic’ and not more: ‘as for 象’「象に関して言えば」.
(b)「が」is not a ‘subject’ marker in J, either. It’s a ‘designation’ marker「措定詞（そていし）」. In「象は鼻が長い」, is「鼻が」a ‘subject’? Not at all.「が」just designates the entity the speaker points to as something/someone a specific condition applies to’: the condition「長い」is applicable to ‘what’?—to「鼻」. More straightforward examples might include「水が飲みたい」. In this sentence, is「水が」a ‘subject’??? No way!!! Here, (i)「発話の ‘参与者’ (=the speaker) → J では明確には意識されず」, and (ii)「発話の他の ‘参与者’ (=水) → designated as the entity X, where the condition is ‘(the speaker) wants to drink X’」(As a matter of fact, more precise definition of「が」is available, but that’s beyond the scope of the argument here.)
さて、４日間に（も）渡って日英の相違点を中心に管見を述べてまいりました。言語学と呼ばれる超マイナーな世界のかなり硬い話題で、少々場違いだったかなと反省もしております。それで、この講義（漫談？）はこれにて一旦打ち切りと致します。言語学に興味関心をもつ一介の人間として、皆さまに (It’s crazy good! とまではいかなくとも)「へえ～、面白いね！」とか「ああそうなのか、なるほどね～！」などと少しでも思っていただけたとしたならば、それだけで本望です。 (It’s crazy! と言われると困るのですが…😌) こんな話題でも構わないよとおっしゃってくださるご奇特な方が万が一にもおいでのようなら、また日を改めていずれの日にか話題提供をさせていただけたらなあ、などと思っております。
